nudger08, yes it's supposed to be funny.
Okay, it was "us" that made him a star and made then him want to run away from it because being a Beatle was just too much stardom.
I'm a big Lennon fan, but anything that can take his ego down just a peg by throwing his own words at him is pure genius.
The real punch line is that John couldn't see the humor in it at the time.
