@KatiushaVN4 but still, I must admit that China did not fought well in the 79 war, unprepared, mal-trained and poorly supplied, also Vietnam was toughen by the 18 years of constant fighting with USA and the civil war, China didn't went to war since 1962, so that's why china gained no advantage, but the main cause of China retreating was due to USSR and VN didn't fought USA alone, but rather with Chinese and Soviet aids

@KatiushaVN4 the third thing you did not realize is, way before the Sino-VN war, USSR had already stationed 1 million troops on the northern frontier of China, from the Pamirs to Manchuria, that's also why USSR did not had enough troop to fight Afghanistan, Brezhnev warned explicitly to Deng Xiaoping that USSR will attack if China do not retreat from Vietnam, that's why China had to withdraw to avoid fighting in both South and North front at the same time

your first point can be right, because battle of Dien Bien Phu was a great victory to VN.but again, if french wasn't devastated by the great war in Europe, they can come back at anytime. secondly, you disagree with civil unrest, that's becoz both China and VN are not democratic systems, the primary concern of US government is to be re-elected, not to fight wars, even Vo Nguyen Giap himself agree that Vietnam did not won any battles, but politically victorious

Don't forget right at that time, Vietnam fought 2 countries at a time that were Cambodia (Khmer Rouge) from the south and China from the north. Still Vietnam not retreat from south, but also liberated Cambodia for good.

@KatiushaVN4 again, viettnam did fought well and China was not prepared that time, but still, the skirmish continue between the two countries until 1988 and the battlefield was in Laoshan borders, the war did not end in 1979, but still, Vietnam kept what it had and mainland China was not furthered occupied by Vietnam. In my opinion, Vietnam fought better than China did in 1979, it had not lost any territories and China suffered terrible casualties, thumbs up for VN

French retreat?? LOL They actually waved White flags.

U.S.A retreat due to civil unrest??? LOL The U.S government spent tons of money in Vietnam War and the whole plan of U.S in Asia-Pacific. They couldn't retreat just because of bunch of demonstration.

During Sino-Viet War, Soviet was broke and had no power to attack China due to war planning against Afghanistan
