I just got this car running good enough to start driving it short distances. Fixed the exhaust, brakes, carb, fuel pump and washed it!

  • Does this car have a Powerglide transmission? Sounded like it when you put it in park. Absolutely beautiful car; I love it!

  • @tlfrantz1 That's a 4 speed Hydramatic Trans. I'm pretty sure GM only put the Powerglide (2 speed) in the Chevy and lower end of the Olds line.

  • @UJAXMAN Wouldn't it be the band shifted Jet Away trans in 58?

  • @ExUSSailor I've never heard them called that but it's definitely a 4 speed Hydramatic, one of the best transmissions ever made. My '60 Catalina and 63 Bonneville have the same trans and I recently got rid of the Slim Jim and put one in my '63 Grand Prix.

  • A 1960 Pontiac behind??

  • Yes, check my other videos for more on that one.

  • in reverse).

With the advent of the corporate Turbohyrdamatic the 4 speed was relegated to the annals of history. There was big business for the repair shops in the early and mid '60's converting over the older cars to the newer trans.

  • The Hydramatic Transmission is thought by many to be the most complex trams ever put in a car. They were tough to work on because of their complexity. Getting the shift points right took lots of practice and talent. When they were right they were wonderful and really help move out those brutes and they were also fairly economical if driven conservatively. When they were starting to fail the shift points would become less and less noticeable until it just wouldn't shift at all (except maybe

  • The Hydramatic transmission was Cadillac's name for that transmission. The corporate name was Jet-Away. Cadillac always had to have their own name for everything as a part of their image marketing. After all it just wouldn't do to have the "same" transmission as Pontiac. They had "Ash Receivers" instead of ash trays. "Cigar" lighters instead of cigarette lighters. Instrument "nacelles" instead of clusters. Etc. Etc.

  • @FirstWard24: LOL

  • My favorite model and year. What a beauty...

  • You almost need a backup alarm on that tank. They need to get back to putting some style back into cars.

  • That was 2 gallons of gas easily! @$4.00 a gallon you must be rolling in the dough! lol

  • @gibbletz Yes this is a great looking car. Not too many of them around. I have one as well. A white 1958 four door but is in a billion pieces. Looking at this video really inspired me to start the rebuild process.

  • @UJAXMAN My brother has a 1960 Star Chief with the same trans in it. I believe it's the same trans, just a different name.
