From the Friends of Frank DeMiero Jazz Festival. February 27th, 2009. John Pizzarelli, performing his version of "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" from "South Pacific", with impromptu vocal accompaniment by the Meadowdale High School (Lynnwood, WA) Jazz Vocal Choir, "Impressions". Choral arrangement by Jeff Horenstein, vocal instructor at Meadowdale High School.

  • Love the little Sondheim moment -- "Children will listen" -- at the very end. So sweet: thanks for sneakiness!

  • I actually think the added verse takes a lot away from the song. "you've got to be taught to love all mankind' implies you would not normally love all mankind. The entire idea behind the rest of the song is that you have to be taught prejudices, fear, etc because people will accept others without being taught this. So if you have to be taught to love too are people naturally apathetic? I know thats likely not what was intended but the instructor needs to put more effort into interpreting lyrics.

    However, no one mentioned the additional verse added to the song to turn a negative into a positive. I think the words are perfect. Bravo!
