  • What beautiful harmony, beautiful words, seemingly so simple that anyone could believe if they want to. A beautiful melody. And a real treat to see the harmony. Thank you.

  • @Maspixxx I disagree. Stainer could write proper voice leading in his sleep—like all his Victorian contemporaries, he practically ate this stuff for breakfast. It's just that the rules have changed over time. Check out Stravinsky's counterpoint, or Britten's: for them, too, counterpoint means something different.

Besides, this is a homophonic piece. In the Renaissance, writing polyphonically was all the rage; styles come and go, but all that matters is that a composer employ his/her style well.

  • I can remember singing this piece in my Church Choir back when I was in High School (1966-1970). Sure brings back memories.

  • Many thanks morphthing1 for all your hard work in uploading so many wonderful works with scores. You always choose excellent recordings. I have just listened through all parts of Stainer's Crucifxion and come back to this one to post this comment. What an experience! Thanks again (St Mary's, Moseley, Birmingham UK). P.S. Any chance of Stainer's Mag and Nunc in B flat? I can't find it on here anywhere

  • Superb - a very good lesson in harmonisation! Thanks for posting. Robert (Leeds Parish Church UK 1963 - 1971)

  • Absolutely gorgeous.

  • @thepowerrangersrule Yes He does. It shows the way He was thinking at the time which lead up to Him sending His Son...

  • Just beautiful and I love being to see the music and sing along. God Bless.
