The turbo was starving from oil due to a clogged screen/filter housed in a banjo bolt attached at the top of the head on the turbo side of the engine( follow the oil line on the top of turbo). This (in my opinion)a direct result of improper maintenance (lack of oil & filter changes) and would have been avoided if the manufacturers recommended maintenance intervals where adhered to. IN MY OPINION IMO

  • Got a little shaft play, do ya? Christ

  • This is a KNOWN issue with new subarus. There is a technical service bulletin saying to remove that filter to the turbo because it will clog up even with proper maintenance. By the looks of things this is a TD04 off a 08 wrx. I upgraded my turbo to a vf52 and removed the filter to prevent this from happening to me.

  • God dam!!!

  • i like how he makes it clear at the end of the description that its his opinion.

  • @SRT480HP there is absolutly no shaft play what so ever hahaa

  • How much does it cost to fix or replace a turbo? I'm thinking about buying an 02 impreza wrx and just getting an idea about the reliability of these cars.

  • Psh, I bet it ran great, thats just a tiny bit of play!

  • @MinusLULZ I called the my Subaru dealer, and right now I'm not covered under any warranty from Subaru. The only warranty that covers the turbo is the powertrain warranty that lasts up until 60,000 miles, which I hear from other Legacy owners that is useless when you have to replace your turbo since they make you pay for half of the cost out of pocket. So I'm trying to get a warranty that will cover me at least to 100,000 miles when the turbo does quit on me. So you said you rebuild turbos?

  • @MinusLULZ I have the same turbo in my Legacy GT, and I'm approaching 65,000 miles. And I'm debating whether to change the turbo out, or just let the warranty take care of a inevitable failure of the VF40? Any advice would be appreciated.
