I wish I could help. Looking back I'm not even sure I read the pattern correctly. I tried to make another one and kept unraveling it because I didn't like the way it was turning out. The author of the pattern has a youtube channel as well.

Hi I am trying to do the same pattern and was wondering if you could explain how the first, center, and third sides are done. I am having the hardest time figuring that out as I am only a couple months new to crocheting and do not understand a lot of the crochet terms. Thank you for any help you are willing to give me!

I had the same problem and just 1/2 double crocheted through the slits. I'm going to try and make it again for a friend. I think I understand it a little better now, especially since I look at a couple of finished projects at ravelry.com

nice I wish i could understand the language of crochet. If i see someone do it then I learn quickly....I have to see someone crochet or show me hands on. but when it comes to them crochet books with the abreviations its confuses me...lol
