Some people only respond to intimidation. I have worked with self-motivated and competent people. I have also had to yell at people who stayed up all night playing video games and then were asleep during safety presentations and when operating guns. You can't easily get rid of them so you have to communicate in their way.
You have to be able to work with all sorts of people. The Uber-motivated part is a joke though.
