Who are those naked ash-covered men? And why do they seem to be worshipped?

They are "Naga Babas" - ascetics who give up clothing and other 'things', wearing only ash and holy "Rudraksha" Beads, made from seeds from a certain tropical fruit. They are worshipped, or respected, because they are 'holy men' to people who believe that asceticism is a divine path, hat they have given up on a normal life and live 'closer to godliness' through their tapas (or hard activities to bring about good spiritual benefit, i.e. living in a cave, fasting, meditating a lot, etc.

Can any Hindu tell me as to how can one be forgiven for his sins by just taking bath in the river without asking for pardon to the person, he/she has affected their lives. Hindu religion seems to be very easy as if you kill hundreds of people and later take the bath in the river and your sins are over. Does not seem to be logical.
