There used to be many roads like this in San Francisco. They were built like this primarily in the 1800's. And it's pretty obvious why if you think about it. How well do you think a horse drawn carriage would do either going straight up or straight down a street that was this steep? It wouldn't do well at all. The curves allowed a much easier and controlled ascent or descent. This stretch of Lombard Street is one of a few like this still left in SF. There you go, class dismissed.

ok am i the only one that sees this road as a huge fire safety hazard? how do u expect any firefighting aparatus to get to one of these houses incase of a fire? oh i forgot fire trucks can fly and hover now to make getting to fires easier (NOT) but i will admit this is an awsome road and i hope to drive down it some day.
