I had a activity initiated in my anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) after reading a very interesting article in Scientific American Mind about laughter and insight. I put some of the other information I have learned about the ACC together with this recent article and have come up with some interesting conclusions about when flashes of insight or creativity are likely to occur.

  • correction: Around 1:25 I start to point out where the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is. What I point out however, is the entire cingulate cortex. The ACC is toward the front or rostral of that area. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (DACC) would be toward the top and rostral of the area indicated.

  • One other thing which I feel I must add... in the study, the subjects were shown a scarry movie "The Shinning" which caused anxiety. What if however they were shown a movie or scenes with sadistic behavior or torture (i.e. Saw or Hostel)? My best guess is that it would make them more creative because activity is initiated in the ACC when witnessing others in pain (provided you are not psychopathic).
