Dinosaur Jr. were largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, they injected late-'80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise. As the group's career progressed, it turned into a vehicle for J Mascis' songwriting and playing, which had the ultimate result of turning Dinosaur's albums into largely similar affairs. Over time, Mascis shed his hardcore punk roots and revealed himself to be a disciple of Neil Young, crafting simple songs that were delivered at a crushing volume and spiked with shards of feedback.

  • All-time top five bands:

    1) The Pixies

    2) Sonic Youth

    3) Dino Jr.

    4) Fugazi

    5) The Melvins/The Velvet Underground/Hum

I'm curious what other Dino Jr. fans listen to. I'm always up for any suggestions for a band I may not have heard. Along those lines, some more obscure recommendations for Dino Jr. fans, that you may not have heard: The Jesus Lizard; Explosions in the Sky; ManMan; Team Dresch; At the Drive-In/The Mars Volta; Neutral Milk Hotel. You may know some or all. Any suggestions for me?

  • @mphurwitz Great taste you have there! I'd recommend Swervedriver, they're (to me) one of the best 90s bands.

  • @mphurwitz Afghan Whigs/Twilight Singers

  • @yudesc Heavy influence on many grunge bands so it would make sense you'd like 'em too

  • i thought these guys were grunge..... I'm in the mood for grunge and bands like Dinosaur Jr.!!!!!!

  • hail hitler!!!!!

  • @achickensandwich I think that has more to do with how you interpreted what I wrote than what I wrote itself. I merely listed some of my favorite bands in the genre and asked what other Dino Jr. Fans were into. But, no worries. I'm not insulted or anything. Misunderstandings--they happen.

  • @mphurwitz For some things a bit more obscure and new, check out: Ovens (Movin' On), Joyce Manor (Leather Jacket), and French Exit (You Should've Married a Whore).

My favorite songs put in parenthesis, otherwise they might be a bit too hard to search on Youtube.

  • @mphurwitz That's fine then. But the way you wrote it made you sound pretty narrow-minded.

  • @achickensandwich Seriously, why are you being a douche? I listen to every genre of music, but I'm not going to come to a Dino Jr video and start talking about how much I love Django Reinhardt. Dork.

  • @resistor27 One of my all-time favorite Sonic Youth songs. Saw them play that live @ summer stage in NYC...f'n epic!
