Shot at the MAKE Faire in San Mateo. This is a tactile feedback controller, designed (I believe) by this gentleman from Stanford's CCRMA group.
One potential usage is a "glove" device, with these magnets embedded in the fabric. When the glove slides over the controller, the strips cause a tactile feedback (the resistance) that gives the user a sensory response to the device. In this case, he's using it to emulate the feeling of running your finger over a string and triggering a sound with it.
I found it to be an interesting sensation.
