GLOOMY SUNDAY ~ Artie Shaw & His Orchestra ~Pauline Byrne ~1940 ~ Bluebird Records.
This is a "deep" song, as the lyrics will tell, but it was just like Artie Shaw to record something like this. Maybe it was because Artie was known to be "gloomy" at times himself and he could possibly relate to the sentiment & sorrow of this song. Artie Shaw's theme song was a song called "NIGHTMARE" and it too, had a "gloomy" sound to it, but whether it was a sad sounding tune or a up-beat number, Artie Shaw & his Orchestra were absolutely great, as were, many of his vocalists.

  • My grandad brought this vinyl back from India ( poona ) just after the war 1945 . We listended to this and had a right good laugh .

  • @yorkshirepudding88 : (quote:) " We listended to this and had a right good laugh " . Just curious.... what was there to laugh about , it's not a funny song ?

  • @MrRJDB1969 Either there's some type of underlining meaning of the song we don't get, or they were just laughing because they had a good time listening to the song

  • @Josephdorf03 : I guess so ??

  • What a genius he was, a giant. I still have my dad's 78 of this and have always loved Shaw. This is such a great piece and the vocalist is perfect.

  • @raleighsquare : I agree 100%.

  • This song does choke me up but not because of its content but because of my dad (he was 14 in 1940) & my other relatives & friends who lived in that era that are all gone now. I love & miss them so much & this music is in their memory

  • Sad Song!

    Aloha from Hawaii!

  • My ex-father in law used to listen Gloomy Sunday (and other tunes I'm sure) in-between missions in India in 1945. He was a navigator on Liberators and they were responsible for dropping food supplies into the jungle for the starving native population. Their one and only record player had stopped working when the internal "rubber band" had perished in the humid atmosphere. They used to hand spin the deck as they were desperate for any kind of distraction. RIP Jack S.

  • I have this on 78, I have the original from Paul Whiteman

  • A simply lovely tune. TY for posting.

  • This song is so beautiful

  • Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Does anyone know where I can get the vinyl for this? It maybe difficult but I'd love to find it.

  • favourite version of the song. great voice, great arrangement. and i like how artie/pauline skip the "i was only dreaming" part. this one needs to end in tragedy.
