This was my first trip over to the old Crescent Route just for watching trains. I caught one at Five Row, and, due to the lack of a scanner, I missed a bunch during lunch. I made it over to the Salisbury Wye to see the last few trains of the rush. I did get some time at the NCTM as well.

Train 1: P61 growls uphill past Five Row with 3 HH GP38-2s.
Train 2: A NB Manifest passes the Salisbury Wye with 2 Catfish and a GP50.
Train 3: 212 is close behind with a couple of UP SD70Ms. He gives us a shave and a haircut!
Train 4: 134 comes off the S-Line with a Catfish, a Conrail widecab Dash-8, a Catfish, an SD70M-2, a HH GP38-2, an SD60, and a HH GP38-2.
Train 5: The NCTM museum train powers up past the pedestrian bridge at the museum with Southern FP7 6133.

  • The S-Line Starts off the New Line at Morristown,TN and follows the French Broad River to Asheville,NC before going to Salisbury.

  • whens the rush?

  • No problem. It is wierd hearing a horn that sounds like a Gevo horn on a catfish, usually everytime a K5 on a catfish gets messed up they will slap a P5 on it, I have even heard P3s and RS3Ls on them.

  • oh ok thanks for the info on that. i knew GEVOs were the main locomotive that the K5HL is known for being on, but i also thought for a little while that that was a K5HL maybe replacing something else on the catfish.

  • They dont use K5HLs on Catfish they use

K5LAR's GEVOs use K5HL's. That horn is a regular K5LAR its just fouled some, making it sound like a GEVO horn. You see it all the time on tophats and sometime on catfish.

  • It does sound a little off, though.
