iOS 4 allows users to switch from app to app. While the ability to multitask is handy, there are several reasons why you may want or need to completely shutdown an app.
- Too many apps running in the background can eat up memory and slow processor speeds.
- If an app freezes or requires a restart.
- Closing apps can help conserve battery life.
Here's how:
Step 1: Double tap the home button to view the apps that are currently running.
Step 2: Tap and hold any app on the bar until the apps start to wiggle and a red bubble with a minus sign appears in the top left corner.
Step 3: Finally, just tap on the red bubble of the app(s) you wish to close.

That doesnt always work, i.e. "bad apps" that leak memory will still require a restart of the device to truely "clean" memory.
