Putting a strap with a ratcheting buckle around the perimeter of a yurt greatly reduces the flapping of the wall fabric in the wind. The strap can be removed when it is not windy. The narration is hard to hear but is really not important.

  • would you recommend a wind and snow kit for a yurt in Washington State? Mostly wind and rain here, but we do get snow occasionally. Thanks.

  • @dead4fun Yes, I'd recommend it. The snow and wind kit costs a bit more but it doesn't take a lot of time to install and it will protect the yurt from those freak wind and snow storms Washington can get. Peace of mind goes a long way in a soft structure.

  • What kind of snow load can it take?

  • @uschdog The most snow it has ever had on it was a foot, and that was pretty wet and heavy snow. I knocked the snow off with a long broom because it seemed to be stressing the rafters a bit. Most of the time, the roof sloughs off snow when it gets to be about 3 inches deep. We occasionally get 2 foot dumps in a day, but have never had any issues.

  • yes we are still around. During a normal wind (less than 30 mph) you really don't hear it at all. .During a strong wind (30 -50 mph) you hear it a little and the window flaps can flap around a bit. When it really gets going (80 mph) it sounds like a freight train. Wind doesn't ever seem to affect keeping the yurt warm. When it gets really windy up here it is usually because the temperature jumps up above freezing very rapidly.

  • man that was really windy. where are you guys?? alaska? canada? crazy wind for sure.

  • We are in Alaska. Yeah, that was a really windy day, but not the windiest day we've seen.

  • We set our new yurt up 5 months ago, its 3 am on the oregon coast...cant sleep... because we are currently sitting out our yurts first trial by fire, it has been blowing hard for two days gusting up to 90 mph. Even with the full wind kit and wind cable, I am so happy to have this same strap set up on our yurt, thanks to you're posting this video...peace of mind. Thank you.

  • I really appreciate this type of documentation!! and to know you're in Alaska! and the yurt really is resilient against the winds.....

  • Just curious if your still around, do you hear the wind loudly inside? Are you able to keep the inside warm enought hrough those windy cold days?

  • Where did you buy your yurt? I'm living in Canada BC.
