Since posting this clip,, I've discovered some errors in the calculations of emission savings we envisage .
Since Dr Charlton has just gone overseas, correcting the errors on screen, is not presently possible.
Here is what you should note.
1. .We claim that each Australian car produces between 4 and 4.5 tons of carbon per year. Too high. The figure is closer to 2.88 tons, depending on economy and mileage.
There are 12 million cars in Australia.
2. We claimed they collectively produce 55 million tons of carbon per year.. too high . The figure is closer to 35 million tons.
3. We deduced that cutting Australian car journeys by just 18%, (riding a bike instead for example) , would avoid 9.5 million tons of carbon per year. Too high . The saving is approx 6.3 million tons.
Even so, 6.3 million tons is a huge saving for a small lifestyle change .
We note too that the Australia Govt will take no carbon savings specifically achieved through car reduction and bike use to Copenhagen in December,
Since 30% of trips in Denmark are made on bikes, and only .8% in Australia, we see embarrassment ahead.
We are also disappointed to discover that the Federal Government's, Green Vehicle Guide, does not consider the bicycle as a vehicle.
The guide is solely concerned with Australians buying greener cars. Why?
With Electric bikes making cycling more efficient and accessible, the bike as a vehicle can become ever more important. Or is the E bike not a vehicle either?
The photos of people on bikes in Copenhagen come from a fabulous bike blog, Copenhagen Cycle Chic. Take a look!

Electric bicycles are the next major revolution! The second an easy to use conversion kit comes along or more bicycle shops offer the service I see a lot more people converting over (including myself). Right now I continue to use my standard style bicycle but I hope to either purchase an electric assisted bike or buy a conversion kit in the future. :)
The photos we used of bikes in Copenhagen come from a fantastic Danish bike blog, (not to be missed) Copenhagen Cycle Chic.
And also from Copenhagenise, com, another great site. The Danes are making themselves available to advise other countries like Australia on how to do better with bikes.

more bikes is good for everybody: less pollution, less traffic jams, and healthier people.

I hope they'll come again. Mike Rubbo
