The Burbs is one of Goldsmith's most creative pieces of work he ever made. The entire score has shooting guns, barking dogs, and shattering glass and jumps from Gothic organs to Western rhythms in an instant. Not to mention the fact that each character is given their own theme even if it's so absurdly out of place and seems as if it belongs in an entirely different genre of film. Also lets not forget the big kicker that Jerry Goldsmith pokes fun at himself here which will make veteran Goldsmith listeners fall over from laughter. The echoing brass motif from Patton through out the score will bring a smirk to your face and so will just about everything else that Goldsmith throws at you.

"Neighborhood Watch" offers a string motif which is later on meshed with an odd sounding instrument which I guessing is some sort of toy? I'm still baffled by most of what goes on in this score and I can't even make sense of it all to be honest. Though I must say that the use of the Organ is nice since it does offer a very Gothic feel to the entire score and strangely balances out the odd sound effects that Goldsmith utilizes.

"A Nightmare in the 'Burbs" is also one of the more bizarre tracks in the album with it's exotic jungle drums playing along with the Organ and add to that some seductive female vocals with a harsh sounding violin might make you have a "WTF?" moment (excuse my crudeness).

The End Credits role all of the genres presented in the score into one lovely suite. Filled with the experimentation and quirky instruments and even the Patton theme this is really an odd score but probably Goldsmith's best comedy score. If the final cue of the track doesn't leave you smiling or laughing then I think you need to be committed because this score brings nothing but sheer absurd joy to your ears.

  • I own the Varese Sarabande 25th Anniversary Volume 2 compilation and it has the End Credits from The 'Burbs on there. It's one of the only tracks on that compilation thus far (I've listened through up to halfway of disc 3) that I come back to often, it's just that great. I haven't heard 95% of Goldsmith's entire output but he hasn't let me down yet.

  • There's still a lot of music of his that I need to listen too. He was at his best during the Bronze Age which took place during late 70s through out most of the 80s and early 90s.

  • it came with the frame.

  • How cool is it that such a great comedy movie has such an epic sounding theme?? ^_^ haha what @CrazyDancingJoe said is absolutely right.

  • Great piece of music. They don't make soundtracks like this anymore.

  • Fuck me im gonna stick this film on right now and buy the CD. Yes....Christmas HAS come early.

The 80's were the golden period of films, music and soundtrack.

  • :55 - 2:10 is my favorite part. The military song is also great

  • @CrazyDancingJoe Totally feel you, that faux western theme is one of the best "hero" themes ever. Who knew a late 80's dark comedy could have such an awesome score?

  • @BoosterSilver LMFAO LOL XD

  • Smells like they're cooking a god damn cat over there!

  • @MikeAM78 I think I know this movie, I may have in a dvd set. I'll look for it. thanks

  • This my favorite score from the Dante/Goldsmith collaborations, although all were great.
