@eagelswift I'm not defending it, it's glaringly wrong, BUT with traditional English when the gender of a certain object or person is unknown it was referred to with the masculine pronoun 'he' until sometime in the late 60s due to issues with gender discrimination and the modern women's movement. Also, with most animals it's common for people to mistake the gender unless we check or are deliberately told. Both of these circumstances could explain why.
