Body dysmorphic disorder is a condition that isn't as talked about as other mental illnesses. So I felt the need to bring it up to the public.
Most people suffer self esteem issues at one point or another so don't stress out that it means you have BDD.
BDD is a very extreme case of symptoms that literally stop the barer from leading a normal life and activities.
Some people suffer with this condition and feel alone because they don't even know it exists.
I just want them to realize they are not alone and there is hope. Seek help.

  • It is apparent the studies to which the Wikipedia article you have based you're information was compiled in "Western" (cliche i know) culture that is not to say people from other cultures do not suffer from this seemingly horrible illness but i would like to see a similar study on cultures where there is very little emphasis on "common beauty techniques" and/or routine updates on trend guidelines, places where certain looks are meant for ceremonial/class purposes only. Thankyou & have a niceday.

  • @Ultrabot227 That would actually interest me also. One would think the impact would be different but just as great in other cultures...I am curious as to how they cope.

  • Do you have it?

  • @thebrokegothgirl do you?

  • Mental illness is a huge factor in allot of peoples lives.

In Australia one in five people experience a mental illness at some stage in their lives and many experiencing more than one mental illness at one time.

Mental illness are things like Depression, Body Dismorphia, Bi Polar, Anorexia, these effect 1 in 3 people.

I'm sure you are a beautiful person but please remember comments such as its bulls*$t are very hurtful to people that have suffered or have had someone they know suffer from it.

  • From self-starvation, to obsessively hiding behind make-up, to no longer being able to go out in certain lightings, wear short-sleeves or skirts without leggings, then brushing my hair in my face, to thinking I don't even look "human", to -

To purging... Restriction... Diet pills at ninety-three lbs and 5'4...

To this: I hate myself physically, but I know there is something beyond the aesthetics. I've held fast to my intellect - this mind is my incentive to live.

  • @CountessGrotesque I dont know,I may.

  • xanax!

  • I wish to say something...hopefully others will also understand. I suffer from this badly. I was diagnosed by several doctors with BDD, having two EDs, and manic depression. Today, I had took too many meds trying to kill myself. Now I feel sick, weak, and upset that because my mind plays these tricks on me, I can't function. So, I hope others who have this problem know that things will get better...we just have to believe it will.

  • @CaptainKacknup Both beauty and ugly are in the eye of the beholder.

Of course I'm not attracted to every person in the world.

The thing about BDD is that like any illness it is non discriminating, some people with BDD may actually be ugly to other people. That is why they become fixated with perfection. But sometimes those very people will still have people who do not think they're ugly at all. Everything is relative to the individual.

  • @CountessGrotesque

Though i might agree with you, you can't argue that there are really, and i mean REALLY ugly people out there and if you tell me that you've never seen anyone you thought "Yuck"... Well, i'm not buying that.

  • @SingleVirginForever That is how ALL people with BDD think.. there is no right or wrong. Beauty is still in the beholder.
