This is a summary of my Fulbright research during 2006-2007 on floral arch adornments in the Xalapa region of Veracruz, Mexico. It describes the construction of floral arches beginning with plant harvesting and describes my research questions and methods to study the affect of this activity on endangered species. Footage is included from fiestas in Teocelo and San Andres Tlalnelhuayocan, Veracruz.

  • Very nice description of your research--thank you for sharing this. The issues involved evoke a strong feeling of ambivalence: it's hard to empathize with the villagers' jubilation, knowing that their arches come at the expense of vulnerable species. At the same time, I hope they can find a way to continue their traditions sustainably. I assume farming bromeliads is out of the question? That would seem to be the most obvious solution.
