Arrest in Rancho Bernardo Stabbing Murder; Suspect Named

RANCHO BERNARDO - San Diego Police arrested a neighbor for the stabbing death of a woman iat her Rancho Bernardo apartment Thursday.

Police say the suspect, 40-year-old Richard Saldivar, has lived in the apartment directly across from the victim's apartment for several months with his wife and two children.

San Diego Police homicide detective, Lt. Kevin Rooney, says the victim and suspect were acquainted with each other but were not involved in a relationship.

The woman lived in the 15000 block of Avenida Venusto in the Overlook Apartment complex. The complex is next to the Bernardo Heights Golf Course. The victim had lived in the apartment by herself for more than two years, according to investigators.

The 28-year-old victim was walking around the parking lot, talking on her cell phone with her parents who live in Ohio. Her parents heard a man's voice, a struggle and then their daughter scream. Then the phone went dead.

"Officers were called out here to check on her welfare," explained Rooney. "They ended up entering her first floor apartment, a short distance from her car, and found her body inside."

Rooney says there was no sign of forced entry in the Thursday afternoon killing.

The detective says investigators think they know the motive, but are not going to reveal it at this time.

The victim's identity has no yet been released.

Saldivar was taken into custody at about 10 p.m. Thursday night for questioning. Police found him waiting in his car in the apartment complex parking lot with his wife and children.

Saldivar was booked into the county jail on one count of murder Friday morning, according to Rooney.

Wow...my house is only about a mile and a half away from where this occurred. There hasn't been much crime in Rancho Bernardo when I stayed there during my middle school and high school years.
