Gregory Thomas Smith (born December 22, 1983 in Alexandria, Louisiana) is a Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the Oakland Athletics. He attended Louisiana State University and was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the sixth round in the 2005 amateur draft.
On December 14, 2007, Greg Smith was traded to the Oakland Athletics along with Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Aaron Cunningham, Dana Eveland, and Chris Carter for Dan Haren and Connor Robertson. Smith made his first major league start on April 9th, 2008, pitching six innings and allowing two earned runs, in an effective start that allowed the Athletics to eventually win.
Smith's most deadly asset, his lethal pickoff move, is gaining notoriety around the league. It is considered one of, if not the greatest pickoff move of all-time. He has picked off 12 runners as of July 24, 2008 in his first 6/10's of a season.
