@jakesilv the difference in people is where the tomiki style is an improvement on the traditional as we never rely solely on a particular technique but try to move smoothly between techniques using many many different applications, grasps, holds and atemi. It's learned as part of randori (competitive aikido) but leads on to proper sparring when you personally decide to do it.
