Basic shuttle tatting how-to, showing the double stitch, picots, and closing a ring.

This video shows the way that I tat. There are any number of slightly different tatting methods. The beginner, through practice, will eventually settle into a method that feels most comfortable and natural to them.

The ring shown would be written in a pattern as 3-3-3-3. The numbers refer to how many double stitches. The hyphens stand for picots.
Or, another way of writing it, using the abbreviation "ds" for double stitches and "p" for picots would be (3 ds, p) 3 times, 3 ds.
