There's a lot one can do in twenty-three years (hey, look what Dubya managed in eight!). For director/cinematographer Ellen Kuras and her Laos-born collaborator Thavisouk Phrasavath, two-plus decades added up to The Betrayal, a powerful documentary about Thavi's family and how their fates collided with Kissinger's war and a curdled American dream. We sat down with Kuras and Phrasavath to discuss the film's genesis, and the multiple meanings of its title.

those American white dogs. You can't trust them. They abused and used Lao ppl then after they got what they want they fed them to the wolves to die. This racist white filth asked me what I was doing in "his country" I said what the fuck were you doing in my country dropping the leftover bombs??All you hear about is what happened to the Jewish their history gets shoved down your throat. When Asians try to share our story the racist reaction is always "so what others go through it too".

communism or democracy it was our choice not americas or the soviets. and then they bombed laos and FORCED our familes to immigrate and now we are slaves to your national debt. i fear it was just a giant testing ground for them and their weapons and their tactics. i fear it wasn't about a domino affect but in fact a slow lerching towards china, why fight korea? then vietnam and laos? was in fact communism or was that just an excuse?

Thavi and Ellen, Thank you for this documentary, this is a great tool to document the history, struggles, and hardship that the Laotion people endured; but let this be a learning tool, let the past be the past. For future generations, let's remember that we are all human, we make mistakes. The travisty of wars occur not just in Laos but across the globe... If not for the democracy of this land, this documentary would not exist. Stop bickering, be thankful and be proud to be Laos.

Thavi, be careful Ellen is a total pacifist and an unwitting supporter of the Communist. Her pacifism is what got us into war. She wants to accomodate. Obama is following this same path. Don't be fooled.

We are proud of this Laotian and we should all think, what if our faith was in his situation? Everyone value there moral and there family, but this war had killed those innocent families trying to surivive the nightmares.
