Simon Reeve meets 10-year-old Jahangir, who works in a sweltering glass factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for less than 50p a day. There are more than three million child labourers in Bangladesh, and because more than 80 per cent of Bangladeshis live on around £1 a day, families would go hungry without the money children earn.
Charities and NGOs in Bangladesh now realise they cannot always prevent children from working. But Simon visits one of thousands of centres opened by UNICEF for child labourers to attend before and after their work shifts, so they can secure an education, friendship and a future.
Simon's epic trip around the Tropic of Cancer takes him through 18 countries on the northern edge of Earths tropical zone. Starting in Mexico he travels east through the glorious Caribbean, to a stunning desert oasis in North Africa, across India and Asia, and on a dangerous, covert incursion into the remote hills of western Burma.

Maybe...but i'm afraid feeding everyone could lead to more problems, for example, population explosions as a result of more people eating would lead to a greater toll on the environment/ resources. What is needed is birth control (first and foremost), less religion, and more education...then we can discuss about a better distribution of food.

  • @Lionelrm I doubt it.

Once the belly is full then the want will be , I want what you have, but it took me 30 years to achieve what I have...I don't care I want it now.

Sadly that is human nature, I'm not against attempting to improve their lot , but feeding them is only a very small step to take when leaps and bounds are needed.

You are very right, education would provide a reason to use birth control..so it is a little redundant to say both. The "can't read, I need to feed my kids" dilemma exists in every society, it's just a lot more dire in these countries so I wouldn't blame the lack of education on irrationality...not too much unless it's a case of "I don't need another book, I have ________(Insert religious text here)"...but even blaming that is a little insensitive.

  • @AClockworkPear i totally agree with you, on all points, but probably putting education before birth control as education covers a wider spectrum, including education that itself can act as birth control making people aware of the dangers, risks and issues etc.

indeed, if you think about it, in MEDCs developed alot more through education than food supply, so it's understandable why us westerners want them so much out of work and in education. it's a pity the real world isn't ideological.
