Illegally parked cars on Clarkehouse Road (no parking until 9:30 on those single yellows). I linked this to the council, and this morning at 9:14 (4th November) there was no-one there. So thanks very much to the council for getting on top of this quickly!

  • Took me back as I used to go to school off Clarkehouse Rd. Now in Bristol and it's a very similar problem here too. One of our Cycling Campaign members started putting polite little notices on such cars saying 'thank you for using our lovely cycle facilities but next time please use a bike instead of a car"

  • @bikecat57 King Edward VII? I know some of the staff there. Incredibly they are actually allowed to park there, but only after 9:30. I once mentioned politely to a motorist that she wasn't allowed to park there, but she swore at me, so now I just cycle past and try and watch whether I think they are about to open their doors. (one of my friends who works at King Edward VII was knocked off by a door opening on the stretch of road just before this --- by an illegally parked car).

  • @phoxhat No Sheffield High School for Girls I'm afraid . I cycle a car door's width away from parked cars, then drivers have a much better chance of seeing you and are not as likely to open the door in the first place and secondly you are no-where near the door if it opens. Also has the advantage of making drivers behind you overtake you properly giving you a wide berth rather than trying to squeeze past you. All part of the National Standard as laid out in 'CycleCraft' by John Franklin.

  • @bikecat57 Ah my colleague was knocked of by a parent from the High School :-).

I cycle a door's width away if I can, but Clarkehouse road is extremely narrow once those cars are parked on it. You can see how close overtaking cars come, and you end up with problems with aggressive drivers behind and even oncoming traffic. It is a difficult balance. The poor set up along there is the main reason I chose to video it.

  • illegally parked on the footway too in any case! Hope the road stays clear for you fella.

  • @ynotnilknarf39 Yes, that's a massive problem around Sheffield, but they don't seem to enforce it. Not so bad for cyclists but terrible for pedestrians, runners, people in mobility scooters, mothers with push chairs.

  • There are routes like this in Southampton, too. And many other places. Its good that you got a result, remember to monitor it, and if there are further problems pass it on to people like the CTC or the local campaign group if you're a member.

  • @bikecat57 Yes, the road was clear this morning. So thanks to them for sorting that for now at least! I turned right just after the junction. Interestingly I phoned about this before, and nothing happened. So I think showing them the video helped.

  • Well done. Hope they are saving for their fines.

  • Unbelievable! Good on you for 'taking the lane' at the junction.

I hear you had some success with the council?
