Israeli Tourists Return Home from Mumbai

STORY:
Indian commandos have begun an operation to free Israelis held by gunmen in Chabad House.

The Jewish center is one of three pockets in Mumbai where Indian forces are battling die-hard militants. The building is in a crowded part of the city, making a frontal assault difficult.

Those who are held in the center have been identified as Rabbi Gabriel Holtzberg and his wife, Rivka. The couple's two-year-old son was released on Thursday along with his local caretaker.

Israeli media report that there are several more Israelis still being held in the building.

Around 300 Israelis have returned home on the first direct flight from Mumbai today.

The tourists were greeted by family members and friends who have spent the last 24 hours worrying for their loved ones.

One returning Israeli was staying at Chabad House the day before the attacks.

[Kobi Onasy, Israeli Tourist]:
"We were just seeing CNN and trying to understand what will be the next steps. And a lot of fear from what's going on. Some of the time we heard some of the shoots, and we mostly were caring about Chabad House. I was there personally a day before, staying with the rabbi and having a dinner, so it's a problem I mean."

Others living in Mumbai decided it was safer in Israel.

[Celia Meirow, Mumbai Resident]:
"It was quite scary. It was kind of a feeling like you are in a siege. And they told us not to leave the house and close the windows and just for the next few days to stay inside, but we decided to leave the country anyway because there was rumors that terrorists are still walking around in the street, that they didn't catch and that the riots from the other side are going to get a bit wilder in the next few days."

But despite the events, Israeli flag carrier El Al is reporting few Israelis have cancelled future flights to India and the Far East.
