This is a demonstration of total internal reflection on a gradual polar scale. Laser beam enters all the time from left, only the scale with the rectangle is rotated. Moments of interest are when the beam splits - when refraction turns to reflection. This effect is best proof of the sample being aerogel - no other material is able to make this small refraction.

  • Really? Can you base your opinion? Aerogel has refractive index of 1.02. That's why laser beam is bent so little and that is what this demonstration is all about. The refractive index equals inverse sine of total reflection angle, shown in the video. No other material has this low index and thus is proven that the cube in the video is aerogel.
