Seeing as we couldn't even pay our friends for their tanks and chocolate, we couldn't very well allow anyone out the country with more than a Fiver during those austere years. I have seen the film release year somewhere, but cannot recall for sure, but, my guess, late 40s, but perhaps early 50s which is when the PM and the Chancellor turned the lights off and pretended they were out when the US Treasury Repo man came calling. Joking really, the several failures to pay the War Debt installments were not directly linked to this crisis, but same ball park.
