Question:- You make a interesting case for the Beast's number 666 equaling the Hebrew spelling of Caesar Nero, but hasn't the same the same been done for one of the Popes? Are there other evidences that John was referring to Nero specifically?

(1) Theoretically, the numerical value could fit many names. But the fit must be relevant.

(2) John specifically declares the events of revelation "must shortly take place" (1:1; 22:6) because "the time is at hand" (1:3; 22:10). The papacy arose hundreds of years later.

(3) John is writing to seven historical, first-century churches (1:4, 11; chs. 2 and 3) who are presently undergoing trials (1:9). One of the cries in Revelation is "how long" (6:10). The answer: "a little while longer" (6:11).

(4) The numerical value fits in both the textual form (666) and the important variant (616). One using a Hebrew spelling (in a very OT oriented book composed with an Hebraic grammar); the other using a Latin spelling (apparently to help non-Hebrew readers to understand it).

Why, if the book was written in Greek to a Greek audience would the Hebrew number system be relevant?

Since Rev was written in Greek to a Greek audience the Hebrew and the Latin as well as all modern number systems are irrelevant.

The only relevant number system is the Greek

Why would Luke write to a "Theophilus" -- or why would Peter claim "She who is in Babylon greets you."

These were written during the time of the Neronic persecution. These letters sometimes contain "code" phrases that mean one thing in Greek, but to a believer with a background in both Greek and Hebrew, it would mean something else.

More likely the original was written to Greek speaking Jewish Christians. But it was altered by a Gentile scribe to 616 who knew only the Latin rendering of Nero.

Nero is AN antichrist but not THE antichrist.

Nero is the Beast of Revelation.

John uses the two terms very differently.

Did Jesus physically force people to get marks on their hands and foreheads? That's in Revelation too. The mark of the Lamb and God. These aren't tattoos or anything literally defacing a body. The mark denotes your faith.

I believe Rev. 6:9-10 refer to those saints beheaded long after Nero's time.

The so-called "heretics" who wouldn't accept the Pope (antichrist) as God's

representative on earth.

The Greek letters of the word "Lateinos" (Latin), the historical language of Rome in all its official acts, amount to 666. In Greek, L is 30, A is 1, T is 300, E is 5, I is 10, N is 50, O is 70, and S is 200, a total of 666. This was pointed out by Irenaeus as early as the third century. This same word also means "Latin man" and is but the Greek form of the name Romulus, from which the city of Rome is named. This name in Hebrew, Romiith, also totals 666

Isn't 666 anything more then a "code" for Nero? I'm sure the Christians didn't exacly like him :p, spreaking his name out loud in a negative way was also a bad idea as the emperor should be worshipped.

666 is as far as I know nothing more then another word for the same man.

the fact that some of what daniel saw was sealed,means that--that which was sealed must be revealed by another prophet.THEN came john ,during the seventh seal,john was told to seal up what he heard.. now we know that the two prophets that must come(according to revelation chapter 9) might reveal what john didn't reveal..why i said might? who the hell would i know what they will say for sure????

Mrhunterdion,stop trying to lead people to foolish thoughts. look at all the previous prophecies like Daniel . the vision daniel got was for his time,but he died and all the people that lived with him in Babylon.But,the prophecy was yet to be fulfiledl until jesus came;which is YEARS AFTER daniel died -_-....
