NATURE's "Silence of the Bees" premieres Sunday, October 28 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings). In this online-only video, scientists and bee experts featured in the program discuss the crucial role that honeybees, a "keystone species," play in our economy and ecosystems, as well as bees' fascinating social organization and what we can do to reverse the decline of nature's pollinators.

Academy Award-winning actor F. Murray Abraham narrates "Silence of the Bees," the premiere of the 26th season of "NATURE," the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series produced by Thirteen/WNET New York for PBS. Major corporate support provided by Canon U.S.A. Inc. and Toyota. For more information, visit http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/bees/

  • we need the bees...the bees don't really need us. we need to pay attention to and respect this insect! grow sunflowers!

  • A naturally hive (like in a tree) will die within 3 years because of the mites. These mites have become immune to diseases and environment that used to kill them. These mites attack the bees larvae and in time kill the whole colony. Bees used to be able to defend against these mites but because of pesticides and human involvement, mites are now stronger. Honey bees now can't live naturally.. Im a beekeeper... its quite sad

  • Not the bees! ahhaha my eyes!!!

  • If a flowering plant (containing both male/female parts) get's pollinated, it can produce genetically diverse seeds/fruits...

but does the ovule need pollination just once a season to yield many fruits, or is it like humans, where for every fruit you need a new egg/sperm pollination? Based on my lemon tree, it would seem like the latter controls the fruit yield for a given season.

Also, what about non-fruit plants, like grass... what does pollination do for them?

  • Me to. I own just a few colonies in pitsburgh, and im scared enough for the winter (if its like last year, were both boned). Now i can pile this on my paranoia list.

  • honey has cure for more than 70 diseases!

  • I don't understand why the public doesn't throw the greedy politicians and business "leaders" out on there worthless asses and put intelligent scientists in there positions. Scientists would actually make intelligent decisions that would improve our planet, not run it into the ground to make a quick buck.

  • I heard this guy cured his disease because of bee stings

  • @chaserehn How deluded are you to think PBS is communist? Seriously? And we watch to actually LEARN something about our wider world, and to enjoy the priviledge of not having to endure a bunch of bullshit commericals trying to sell me products that I could care less about. And since honeybees pollinate at least a third of our crops, you'd better care deeply about this. Nature isn't disposable folks.

  • @TheRisingforce2000 bees, dogs and homosexual pedophiles.

  • @byzantine717 I used to have 40's and I started only 2 colonies..but now all gone huhuhuhu..I ll start again I save some money..in my country (Philippines) it cost me $100 per colonies,,,I started 2004 and by 2007 all gone...I moved them to different place near the farm..and I thougth they will do good because there are so much corn farm.I did not realized farmers are using Monsanto treated seeds..

  • bees an dogs are the only creatures on earth that can smell fear
