Koko by Duke Ellington. Live performance of the San Francisco School Of The Arts Instrumental Music Department's Big Band conducted by Meleciio Magdaluyo. Recorded on 1/12/2008. Contact SFSOTA for high quality audio and video.
This is the David Berger transcription of the original Ellington arrangement. Having played it, I can say that although it is not technically tremendously difficult, hitting all the right notes is only about 2% of this piece. It is tremendously nuanced and for musicians this age to be playing it this well is something they should be very proud of.
BTW it was written as a description of a religious service.
Magnificent show of talent, though I do feel that this piece is best played with a slower tempo.
