Australia struggles to battle wildfires - 7 Feb 09

Thousands of firefighters and hundreds of volunteers are battling wildfires in southeastern Australia.

In the state of Victoria, dozens have been killed and at least 100 homes destroyed in the blazes.

People are busy trying to protect their homes and to avoid the heat, as the temperature reaches record levels.

Al Jazeera's Jayne Azzopardi reports.

In my area we had a fire (not to the scale of kinglakes), my family lost a house. I know people who lost everything, and I'm sure they would be hurt by your cruel comments. When i see the next "columbine" i know who committed it.

You're obviously not aware that bushfires are capable of jumping bushfires, in fact in order to prevent these fires spreading you would have needed firebreaks half a kilometre wide stretching for around 100 kms. This fire jumped the Hume freeway, the main thoroughfare through this region, and is four lanes. I suggest you do your research.

i live in Melbourne and i can tell u that the weather was so hot i could hear the oils and moisture in my skin sizzle and evaporate!. i have a family farm in yarram and i had gone down there so help prevent the house burning from the won wron fire it came right up along the horizon so we fled. we came back 2 days later and the house was still standing there was fire damage about 30 meters away from house and the flames had jumped over house it was a miracle.
