This opened up an old wound...damn...heartbreaker...yeah, Coffee could have helped sure...just as Montreal losing to Quebec in round 1 would have helped too...Playing the Canadiens in the playoffs let alone the finals is usually a tough road...I blame Quebec...and Leclair and Desjeardins and Roy...and the Montreal Forum...and Frasier...and...
... I agree, it cost the Kings a Cup for sure. By the time the Kings were in the playoffs, almost all of their offense was being generated from the transition game. And NOBODY was better at getting the transition game started than Paul Coffey.
Aging? He had 57 points in 50 games and was a +16. He also as might recall won the Norris trophy in 95. I personally asked Barry Melrose and he said, " cost us the cup". Gretzky feels the same way. Jimmy Carson was one of the most 1 dimensional selfish players I've ever had the displeasure to watch. But wow, he hit the post in overtime! WE WOULD HAVE WON WITH COFFEY!
I agree that none of those three (Marc Potvin, not Felix, was the 3rd player in the trade) were of the same caliber as Paul Coffey, but Coffey was aging, and Carson could be counted on to score goals. True, he didn't, and he played in only two games after the Vancouver series (Game 5 vs Toronto and Game 4 vs Montreal where he hit a post in overtime!). Shuchuk was a Granato clone (my favorite player that year) whereas Coffey had his best years in Edmonton.
Uh, yes I can. I'll say it again, cost us the cup! Shuchuk, Are you serious? We're talking about a Hall of Famer. The Kings had one of the best power plays that year that all of a sudden became dismal from March through the playoffs. Jimmy Carson? How many games did that truck play in. 2 maybe. None after the 2nd round for sure. Yes the Wings lost and Coffey had 11 points. Yeah you're right, I'd rather have Schuchuk. Oh yeah, I think Potvin was on Toronto that year.
You can't possibly say that. For Coffey we got Shuchuk, Potvin, and Carson. Shuchuk scored that double-overtime goal in this very round against the Canucks in Game 5. Not to mention his check on Dana Murzyn in Game 6 that got the Kings back into the game and, eventually, on to the 3rd round. Coffey was great, but his Red Wings lost in the first round, you know...
