@ZacharyPham it's quite different from what I was told by my Vietnamese teachers. According to them, Viet people lived in the region which located in south China and north Vietnam. They spoke their own language (TiếngViệt) but it's kinda different from modern TiếngViệt we use nowadays. I suppose that Viet people never spoke Chinese as their mother language, but TiếngViệt. I'm not very good at TiếngViệt but I can read some sites in Vietnamese. google for "Người Việt cổ nói tiếng gì"

@ZWQ521 so you're Chinese. yes most Vietnamese words borrowed from Chinese. However, we said in our accent that is why you can't understand, these words called Han-Viet which comprise roughly 60% Vietnamese language, they usually are used in literature and formal conversations.

@bjap1563 She 's speaking Southern accent. And r sound is official sound of the letter r. She pronounced accurately. But in spoken Vietnamese, we don't say like that.
Southern people pronounce "gi" as "d" (like "y" in "young" in English) in stead of "z" like the Northern's do.

After the France attacked Vietnam in 19 century, a French found it's way difficult to understand Vietnamese with the written language (it even contain more strokes than Chinese) . So he base on the similar pronunciation between Vietnamese and French to translate it into modern Vietnamese like it is now.
