This is, in my opinion, one of the most marvellous pieces that Bach ever wrote. And he wrote many!

The context is key. At this point on the Passion narrative, Peter has just denied 3 times that he knows Jesus. Then the cockerel crows, as Jesus had prophesied. Peter is beside himself with grief and departs. Bach then introduces this wonderful aria: "Erbarme dich." ("Have pity [on me, O, Lord]")

Whenever I hear this, it sends shivers down my spine. Profound and thought-provoking.
