Chirttison truly was one of the most underrated genius of jazz piano. My note-for-note transcriptions of both the recording in this video and his recording of "The Man I Love" have been published in my folio "The Soul Of Blues, Swing & Jazz Piano" (Bedford Hills, New York, Ekay Music, 2001). Great Chit! I also wrote extended articles on him and his style on Italian and US music magazines.
Robin Kelley has a biography of Thelonious Monk that's now in paperback. Kelley mentions Herman Chittison as an influence on Monk's playing and improvisational style. If you've heard much of Monk's playing, you can probably hear a lot of stylistic similarities. Monk's harmonic concept was more experimental, but the bass countermelodies and descending flourishes are similar.
@StrideLatinProgRick .
Despite I'm a jazzfan since the early fifties of the last century, I confess that I knew this wonderful pianist only a few months ago...
Thank you for your comment.

Yes, I agree with you. Art Tatum and Teddy Wilson also share some Chittison's patterns.

It's a pleasure to hear from you again, here on Y.T.!
I'm glad you like this music.

Thank you for this mellow music! Herman Chittison is great. He lived a long time in Europe and played there 1934 with Louis Armstrong.
You find another song with him in the "JitterbugBerlin"-channel: I'm Gonna Lock My Heart.
