The Knights of the Garter were actually founded in 1348 when the plauge first hit England. Edward III was origianally going to form the order in 1344-45 (he even started building a round table and begun construction on a special building for the Knights) but he abandonded his plans when one of his good friends, who often fought with him in tournaments, died.

By God, If I was Queen I would make all those Knights of the Garter (however rickety) hoist my Royalness up on their throne toting shoulders and carry me about like they do the Pope. She's sort of a Pope herself.... so there. Make that poor old lady walk all that way...hmmmpf....
