For the Ravelry "I'll show you mine..." thread. This is how I knit; Continental Combined of the Western knit/Eastern purl variety. I can work conventional Continental as well, but I don't usually bother. The only time I do it is when I would have to re-orient the majority of my stitches to Western for a stitch pattern.

  • I knit like you do, and it is rare to find this!

Can you direct me to instructions on decreasing to end up with the correct "lean" for the way we knit?

    Great video!

  • @kjrasmussen Come visit the Combination Knitters group on Ravelry, there's a lot of info in the threads.

  • this clears things up for me a lot. my only question is with knitting combined in patterns. should i always follow the leading edge or foot of the stitch and therefore change the way i knit to continental, or should i only do when knitting purl stitches and purling knit stitches (seed or moss stitch)?

  • @delafunk13 There are 2 parts to working a stitch: (1) how the needle is placed into it; (2) the direction the yarn goes around the needle to form the new stitch.

For stitches that don't twist, always make sure the leading edge or right hand leg stays to the right when placing the needle (1). This is usually the simplest way.

Changing the direction (2) is only easier when lots of Western oriented stitches are necessary for a specific pattern or decrease. I do do this sometimes, though.

  • Not a good tutorial. She goes too fast and her prenunciation is not clear.

  • It's not intended as a tutorial, it's a demo as a bunch of us are comparing notes on how we knit.

  • The knitting demo is clear, and my 63 year old ears had no problem hearing what this articulate gal had to say. Excellent demo.

  • This demonstration changed the way I knit, helped with incipient arthritis, and made purling fun. Great work - thank you so much!

  • !! This is how I knit,

as my grandmother (b.@1885 Poland) taught me. Nice to see I'm not -crazy-

  • Looked at some examples of Contiental and thought I was doing it wrong! Wrong....glad of this video as this is just how I was taught eons ago. Works fine for me and speed right along!

  • I've been knitting combined ( without being aware of that ) since a little girl, and my seed stitches always looked super weird, this video made me understand why and how to do them properly, thank you so much

  • and that would be pronunciation, not prenunciation.

I think this is a very good video at explaining why stitches are done the way they're done. It's not a how-to, necessarily, but a "why-for" as it were...

  • I used to tension my yarn the same way, but found I couldn't keep it up for lace knitting—there, I have to wrap, though I'll still sometimes drop the wraps when I YO, depending on the pattern and desired effect. Also found my left hand would sometimes cramp when working long rows, but I think that was due to just knitting at a higher tension, in general.

Anyway, yes, thank you for saying what I always thought was common sense about purling that way!!

  • I finally found someone who knits like I do! Thanks so much for this video. It helped me to know what to do when knitting in the round. Knitting my first hat had me stumped until I watched your video.

  • I can not believe it, we knit the same. After watching videos of this style versus that style; I started to change my style. Only to go back to my way. I did not know about the twisting of the right leg though. My next project I will be careful ab out that. At least until now I was consistent.
