Myself and best friend Brian Phillips performing a percussion duet that we wrote just 3 days prior to this performance. It is contained within the song "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise". Filmed live with the CBC Jazz Ensemble on November 29th, 2007. More madness at www.derekmunson.com!

  • hahaha you didn't let him choke your cymbals from 0:41 to 0:44 ! that's really funny :D did you forget about that part ? but it was still a wonderful performance. This performance was how i got to know of your drumming abilities :D

  • I know! I cringe at that part every time I watch this video! If you watch the counterpart video (marked "Rehearsal"), I get it right there, but the segments are half as long; on the night of the concert, we decided backstage right before we went on that we wanted to extend those bits, so we did...which is part of why I screwed this up. :D

  • hey derek , i suppose this is the guy the sabians are with now ? :P

  • The Sabians are still with me for the time being, but yes - next time Brian comes down to Tri-Cities or I go up to Spokane, he'll be receiving them. How did you know about that? Been trolling my other video comments? ;)

  • @drumology2001

    nope (:

i asked you who the sabians were going to the last time you wrote on facebook that you were gonna start endorsing Soultone cymbals :D

  • Oh, I see. I had forgotten about that. My bad. ;)

  • @drumology2001 hahaha it doesn't matter :D it was still very well done !

  • Thanks for the lovely comments - I appreciate it. :D

As far as what kind of degree (in Canada) would prepare you for studio work, I'm not sure - I've never been a student in Canada! ;)

In the States, the closest is just a Percussion Performance degree, available at most universities and colleges. The best training, however, is real-world experience, so make sure you're getting out and playing a lot and networking. That'll go farther than any degree. :D

  • wow! incredible! I'm using this as one of my auditions for the McGill jazz performance program. If it could live up to half of this I'm positive I will get in. Also, do you know anything about which jazz performance degree program in Canada will get me best prepared for a career in Studio/performance? Thanks appreciate it!!!

  • awesome video. haha it would have been sick if you guys had crossed crossed sticks, playing on each others'.

but improv is improv, good music is good music, and this is amazing. keep it up!
