Tom Carnegie calls Roberto Guerrero's 1992 Indianapolis 500 track record pole run.

The audio is a bit rough in parts, but it is from the IMS Public address system, which was not of great quality in 1992.

Saturday May 9, 1992
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Speedway, Indiana

Roberto Guerrero took to the track at 534 p.m. EST during a hectic, rain-delayed, abbreviated, Indy 500 pole day session. He set new all-time one- and four lap track records on his way to the pole position.

Lap 1 - 38.762 seconds, 232.186 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 2 - 38.707 seconds, 232.516 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 3 - 38.690 seconds, 232.618 mph (new 1-lap track record)
Lap 4 - 38.692 seconds, 232.606 mph
Total - 2;34.851, 232.482 mph (new 4-lap track record)

The voices heard are the live call on the public address system at the Speedway. Tom Carnegie makes the call, along with John Totten. Guerrero's car owner Kenny Bernstein (King Racing) is seen in the pits.

After Guerrero completed his run, his car ran out of fuel on the cool down lap, and came to a stop on the backstretch. The next car out to qualify was Danny Sullivan, and he blasted by the stalled car of Guerrero. Danny was forced to make his attempt the following day.

On race day, sadly Guerrero spun out on the warm up lap, hit the inside wall, and finished last.

  • Tom Carnegie would not say "It's a new track record" again for four more years. He said it during qualifying in 1996, and that would be the final time.

  • The day dawned with rain, and it was cold, and it seemed like the whole day would be washed out. The rain stopped, but the "weepers" kept the track under yellow intermittently for a couple hours. At 4 p.m., they finally started qualifying, and it was a hectic session.

The sun finally did come out around 4:30 pm or so, and when this was done (shortly after 5:30 pm), the sun was out, as you can see shadows in the video.

  • @doctorindy and the last time it will ever be said at Indy by anyone, no-one will ever get near those laps again

  • Amazing to see the pole day crowd at Indy. so sad to see the empty grandstands nowadays

  • @doctorindy actually, he said it in 2002 when Bill Elliott and Tony Stewart broke the track record for stock cars back to back

  • Roberto always had terrible luck at Indy. I love these days of open wheel racing. RIP TC!
