This is a CRUNCH SETTING comparison between a Mesa Boogie Stiletto Ace 50W head and a Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 50W head (with Mercury Magnetics output transformer), gain and EQ at noon, through an Avatar G212H (2 x 12") cab with a Celestion Vintage 30 and a Celestion G12H30 Anniversary speaker, closed back, aided by a Tonebone Radial Headbone tube amp head switcher and playing a Gibson Les Paul CS Class 5, all captured through a Canon G10 camera, which might render a somewhat thinner than natural sound. The "slap back" echo is from the room, the guitar is plugged straight in w/o effects.

  • oh man, sorry for accidentally deleting my comment, but thanks for replying...

do you think the stiletto cuts through the mix better than the dsl ?

  • Bear with me! It's so new I have yet to try it out with my band! That's happening this Friday, through a Marshall 1960A 4x12 cab. But I talked to another giggin' guitarist who owned one and was very happy with its performance on the road. Ask me again next weekend!

  • So, just returning from band rehearsal. The other guys in the band seem to claim that they can hear me better through the Ace then the DSL. I wonder if its slightly colder bias and tone might work to its advantage when playing in a band! I also think it does cut through quite nicely, better than last week when I played the DLS (along with bass, drums, keyboard, vocal - both times.)

  • @bjornkom thnx for replying!

yeah, i was told that the tubes in the ace run colder, so that could explain the brightness as well.

also, do u think the ace is too bright ? i've heard many people complaining about that.

  • If you are looking for a predominantly warm amp, I don't think this Mesa Ace is for you. It is definitely on the bright side of town. But not necessarily in a bad way - just depends what want! :-)

  • The Marshall is warmer and creamier. Much better.

  • The Stiletto sounds exactly like the MXR Classic overdrive...so does the marshall but more transistor radio like...both a very usable sound, but I would only use something in this sound for like the song 'CUMBERSOME' intro etc., good job on the demo..

  • Glad that does come through - an accurate observation.
