The North American F-82 Twin Mustang was the last American piston-engine fighter ordered into production by the United States Air Force. Based on the P-51 Mustang, the F-82 was originally designed as a long-range escort fighter in World War II; its postwar role changed to that of night-fighting. Radar-equipped F-82s were used extensively by the Air Defense Command as replacements for the P-61 Black Widow night fighter. During the Korean War, Japan-based F-82s were among the first USAF aircraft to operate over Korea. The first three North Korean aircraft destroyed by U.S. forces were shot down by F-82s.

  • @davetileguy Bullshit.

  • @kdraper2007: You are thinking of the XF-85 "Goblin" fighter.

  • Some time the two pilots would turn different directions resulting in a horrific crash!!

  • I saw one in Daton Ohio at the Air Force Museum. I just thought it was an experimental aircraft.

  • There are currently two examples being restored to flying status in 2013. One is the XP-82 from Walter Soplata's farm with the 2270 Hp Merlins, that is being completed, and another F-82-E that has the Allison 143, and 145 engines that produced 2250 Hp. My replica will probably not be flying till 2015-16...Don

  • @spacepatrolman Lockheed built the P-38, North American built the P-51 and F-82, you're thinking of the Hughes XF-11.

  • @spacepatrolman No, Had his own company Hughes Aircraft Company (later Hughes Aerospace) Which was not affliated w/ North American Aviation which made the P 51 Mustang.

  • @4thstooge Wasnt this another brainstorm of howard hughes who built the p38

  • Are their any surviving examples of this "rare bird"?

  • Does anyone know if Bill Koleno (of Titan-51 fame), flew his P-82 replica to Osh Kosh this year? He is building a 60% scale model with four seats, out of all aluminum. Let us know, and if you can, post a video. Thanks, Don .
