Bay Athletic Club's Fitness Inspired Gala in Alpena, Michigan celebrated local people who have transformed their lives through fitness in the past year. The top ten honorees are people who choose to fight cancer, diabetes, kidney problems, chronic illness and MS with fitness. They are people who choose not to make excuses about busy schedules, hectic lives and limitations. They choose to overcome.

But at the end of the night, all eyes were on Kara Gallagher -- the 28-year-old hospital housekeeping employee who was voted the most inspiring story of 2011. With her mother at her side, she won a one thousand dollars prize, including Under Armour apparel, an iPod touch and $300 cash.

Kara won the hearts of the audience by sharing her story of battling sadness and loneliness for most of her life. On the outside, she was living a party life. But on the inside, she was unhappy with how she looked and felt and kept those feelings in the dark.

One morning, she woke up with the resolution to change. She decided to treat her body better. She started tracking her food and jumped into fitness full force with group exercise classes, a Corporate Fit Challenge and boot camps.

Her hard work paid off. With the help of her favorite class, TurboKick, she lost 83 pounds, discovered fitness and unleashed a new life. One year later, she is a confident young woman who is upbeat and always smiling. Her new goal is to reach out to others who may still be in the dark.

In her remarks, Bay Athletic Club owner Trina Gray shared three tips for conquering your health and fitness this year:

1. Get your health out of the dark Stop hiding your health, your weight. Put it out there for examination! Fix it, talk about it. Embrace it and take ownership of it.




2. Get out of your own way. You are the only one holding yourself back. Stop waiting for the right time -- it won't come. Stop waiting for others to join you -- they may never come. Stop waiting for other people's approval -- you might not ever get it.

3. Get a life. Every day you wait to get healthy is a day you waste. Create the life, body, relationships and career you want -- start by working on you!
