Example application of 3D visual SLAM with Xbox Kinect and MRPT. This is a simple program written in 2 hours just for demonstration purposes!

To try it in Ubuntu:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:joseluisblancoc/mrpt
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mrpt-apps

And run: "sudo kinect-3d-slam"

  • Couldn't you interpolate a highly detailed map based on the many frames of video by using their 3D positions?

  • @motters2001 I heavily agree with it.

  • I'm wondering if you could combine the kinect and a tracking system (GPS or move;something very accurate; x y z and direction) and record the 3D environment. That way you could just make the system recreate your room/house/street/city/planet/... Problem might be on how to save the 3D date in a reasonable way; and what to use for the tracking system.

  • Awesome! now all that is missing for your software is to calculate translation and rotation values for the kinect camera point of view !

that would be revolutionnary for 3D capture and would make the process affordable to anyone !

zooming in on an object to allow for both greater texture and greater model detail.

automatic stitching of surroundings, the way panoramic pictures are stitched together

the software would warn when it lost coherence in the capture and ask to reposition on base view.

  • Waouhh, great!!!

    Bravo, c'est trop génial!

un plugin pour 3ds serait top! :)

  • Nice. We really want to see free roaming through a house or office though. Once you can do that and get a good 3D model then a lot of new robotic applications will become possible.
