Григорианское пение одноголосно, хотя в ходе исторического развития григорианский хорал лёг в основу многоголосной европейской музыки: от органума и дисканта вплоть до мессы высокого Возрождения. По степени распева (богослужебного) текста песнопения подразделяются на силлабические (1 тон на слог текста), невматические (2-3 тона на слог) и мелизматические (неограниченное количество тонов на слог). К первому типу относятся речитативные возгласы, псалмы и большинство антифонов оффиция, ко второму — преимущественно интроиты, коммунио (причастный антифон) и некоторые ординарные песнопения мессы, к третьему — большие респонсории оффиция и мессы (т. е. градуалы), тракты, аллилуйи и др. По типу исполнения григорианское пение подразделяется на антифонное (чередование двух групп певчих, так исполняются, например, все псалмы) и респонсорное (пение солиста чередуется с пением ансамбля/хора).

Absolutely amazing! These songs are emotionally charged; it's very beautiful. The harmony relaxes my soul. When listening to this I cannot help but to experience a sense of peace and happiness. The amount of history behind these songs makes it so much more amazing.
