This is a Tool-Assisted Speedrun. All actions are doable realtime with practice, but for this video time was slowed down and errors were redone to create one stream of near-perfect play. No cheats or hacks were used.
A door movement glitch allows some fun in Blaster Master---even in the USA rom, it can be used to skip Area 4 entirely. For the Europe version, though, it gets better: When inserted into a wall, Jason doesn't get stuck; he zips upward at a whole tile per frame. Further, at any time, pausing the game will reset Jason's momentum, and, for one precise frame, allow the player to jump again in midair. Between these two glitches, I have figured out how to defeat Blaster Master without fighting any of the bosses other than the final area's pair.

  • That's actually quite hilarious. I think that is a sign at how some games when they were ported to PAL systems back in the early days that glitches were even more apparent.

  • It becomes more fun once you see the evolution of it.

Here is the Book of TAS Genesis:

In the beginning, there was only the controller and a stop watch. Then there were shoddy quality-vcr tape recordings of said "speed runs". Then comes emulation, youtube, the internet, wikipedia, and Earth all on the same day. Someone decides they can do it faster. This happens over and over as people discover ways to complete the game faster.

It's great when someone discovers how to save 5 seconds..

That's the perfect description. People seem to think that slowing down th game is cheating and save states are cheating. Well yeah... but the point is to use the game how it was programmed, exploiting any flaws to see IF you were perfect how fast it would be possible.
